Pitcairn Islands Study Center
in Angwin, California
A note for philatelists: The
American Philatelic Society's annual
StampShow will be
staged
Thursday-Sunday, August 16-19, 2012 in
Sacramento, which is about 80 miles from Angwin.
As of May 11 only 4 Pacific
Union College dormitory rooms with shared shower/toilet were still available
for up to
four nights (in August 19/out August 23) at a cost of $78.00 per night per double or single.
These rooms are now being allocated on a first-come,
first-served basis
to those paying the registration fee.

St. Helena (8 miles away),
Calistoga (12 miles),
Yountville (17 miles),
Napa (26 miles) and
Santa Rosa,
CA (40 miles).

Commitments to speak have been received from 15
individuals. Three are currently Pitcairn Island residents and one
was raised on Pitcairn. Two are from
Australia, one is from Australia and Norfolk Island, and the remainder are from the U. S. Pitcairn Islanders Jacqui Christian
and Kari Boye Young, Marie Christian Thomas (who was raised on Pitcairn Island) and former Commissioner for the Pitcairn Islands, Leslie Jaques OBE,
will all make presentations.
The following will also speak: Australian
numismatist Ron Edwards; Australian linguistics professor Dr. Peter Muhlhausler;
Australian historian Roger Stuart-Andrews; marine conservation advocate Heather Bradner; philatelist and former Pitcairn
Islands Study Group President Mark Butterline;
Pitcairn Islands Study Center Director Herbert Ford; author Dr. Bob Kirk; author Donald A. Maxton;
history professor Dr. Tillman Nechtman, author and former Pitcairn Log Managing Editor Steve Pendleton; and
maritime, Bounty and Pitcairn collector Tony Probst.
Program:
All events will be
held in the Fireside Room, a building on the Pacific Union College
campus near the Dining Commons and only a short walk from the Nelson Memorial
Library where the Pitcairn Island Study Center is located. The Fireside

Conference attendees will have an opportunity to peruse the extensive resources
available at the Pitcairn Islands Study Center (PISC), which contains one of the
world's largest collections of materials relating to the Mutiny on the Bounty,
Captain William Bligh, HMAV Bounty, and both Pitcairn and Norfolk
Islands. Included in the Center's collection are approximately 1,500 books and
numerous journal articles and non-print items. PISC will remain open for
browsing and research until 8:00 PM on both Monday, August 20 and Tuesday,
August 21. On Wednesday, August 22 PISC will be open from 8:00 AM until
4:00 PM.
Planned Feature Events:
* Dem Tul Pitcairn, the much-anticipated documentary film about Pitcairn,
will have its premiere showing on Monday, August 20, 2012.
* Q & A Skype video chats will be held with
Pitcairn
Island
residents on Monday, August 20 and Tuesday, August 21. The video
image will be projected onto a large screen
in Angwin.
* Small group tours of the
Pitcairn
Islands Study Center will be offered.
Sign-ups will be on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at the mixer at 7
PM on
Sunday, August 19.
* A
Pitcairn handicrafts
market with Pitcairner-woven baskets, wood-carved flying fish, Pitcairn & Bounty
T-shirts, Pitcairn stamps, wood-carved models of HMS Bounty, painted
“Hattie” leafs, etc. will be featured on Monday, August 20 and Tuesday, August 21.

Several pieces of tapa cloth produced by Pitcairn Islander Meralda Warren will displayed
and offered for sale on Monday, August 20 and Tuesday, August 21. For

A United States Postal Service station operating at
scheduled times on Monday, August 20 and Tuesday, August 21 will feature a
special postmark.

The Pitcairn Islands Philatelic Bureau is expected to be represented, with
stamp sales at scheduled times on Monday, August 20 and Tuesday, August 21.
* A DVD containing
digital copies of all of the issues of the Pitcairn Island Study Group's
quarterly, The Pitcairn Log, since its
September 1973 inception as well as some of the out-of-print monographs published by the
Pitcairn Islands Study Group (over 3,000 pages in total) will
make its debut.
* New!
A DVD containing
digital copies of all of the issues of the The UK Log, the semi-annual
journal published by the former Pitcairn Islands Study Group-UK (now known as
The Pitcairn and Norfolk Islands Society) since its January 1991 inception will
make its debut. As a bonus, the DVD contains two monographs published by
PISG-UK.

Pitcairn Island and the Bounty Saga -
Institutions and Monuments: A Worldwide List of Related Museums,
Libraries, Archives, Churches and Monuments, will make its debut.
(Ted Cookson's new monograph reveals where
Pitcairn- and Bounty-related artifacts may be viewed in the U. S. and around the
world.)
